Kicking off Memorial Day weekend at Hamilton's Pool

While Deb and Meg drove to Dallas for the Little Mo Regionals, I took the afternoon off to drop Kate and Claire off over at the Austin Tennis Academy, while Scott and I decided to go to Hamilton's Pool, which is fairly close by.

For those of you who've not yet been to Hamilton's Pool, it seems to be out in the middle of nowhere, in the rolling Hill Country terrain. A satellite photo shows basically a sink hole which developed long ago, and must have surprised the folks who first encountered it.

From the parking area, it's a quarter mile hike down to the pool. As we started down the trail, we noticed a couple in front of us, stopped dead in their tracks. There was a snake crossing the path, seemingly in no hurry to move. After some more folks walked up, the snake took his hint and darted into the brush, unfortunately before I could dig the camera out of the bag. We could use St. Patrick here in Texas!

After that eventful start, we made our way down to the beach area of the pool. Here's Scott:

The water was refreshingly cold, much like Barton Springs. After getting way cooled down, we went on a hike around the inside. Here's a view of the waterfall from the inside area:

And here's looking back at the beach area (amazing really considering you're in the middle of scraggly hill country land):

And finally on to the waterfall. There's nothing quite like taking a shower with the shower head five stories above you!

If that's not enough, the prickly pear cactus are in full bloom so we finish this with an artistic florish:

Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone!
