Corpus Christi Champ Tournament Update
Here's a quick update on Kate and Claire at this weekend's Corpus Christi Champ Major Zone tournament.
I'm reporting from Austin, since I'm taking Meg to the Georgetown ZAT tournament tomorrow.
Claire started the day without a first round bye, but acted like she had one, in winning 6-1, 6-0. It was a fabulous start!
Kate's been fighting lower back pain and it showed early in her match as she was bageled (0-6) in the first set. The Corpus Christi heat combined with her competitive spirit loosened up her back as she battled and won a second set tiebreak 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreak)
Now, feeling much better, she cruised 6-0 in the third set to advance to the quarterfinals which she'll play tomorrow.
Claire came back after lunch for her second match, and hardly missed a beat, cruising to a 6-4, 6-0 win. Deb said she played fantastically and hardly let either of her opponents into the match. Claire's battling has earned her first trip to the quarterfinals as a Girls 14 player. Well done Claire!
Keep it going!
Saturday noon update
Claire steamrolls in her quarterfinal match winning 6-0, 6-2. Deb said thought it wasn't close. When I asked Claire for comments for the blog report, she replied, "For the blog... no comment!" She advances to the semifinals and plays around 2pm.
Kate is in another dogfight, dropping the first set 2-6, but battling back to take the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (9-7). She's right now playing in the third set.
Saturday evening update
Kate did not prevail in the third set, ending up with a respectable quarterfinal appearance.
Claire had a breakthrough tournament reaching the semifinals before dropping a 7-5, 6-3 match. The points collected should help her with a seeding and first round bye for next month's Champ major zone tournament in Clear Lake.
