A Hairy Visitor Comes Knocking

Our well documented Wild Kingdom continues here at the Cahill Hacienda.

I know we're still a month away from Halloween, but we had our own surprise when I went out to go check the mail. As I opened the door, this seemingly friendly tarantula bolted toward the door.

I quickly reconsidered the need to see what the creditors were wanting from us, and slammed the door shut.

Meg and Scott let out the requisite, "Ewwwww... I hate Spiders!" after I called them over to eyeball our hairy friend. It just hung at the door waiting for the next chance for the door to open. We weren't planning for dinner guests tonight so I had other ideas.

I went out through the garage and captured the picture before shooing him with a broom back into the bushes. I certainly didn't want to squish him and deal with the aftermath of tarantula goo!

We looked up the details at Wikipedia for today's educational lesson on tarantulas. I'm not sure about the last part that they taste like shrimp. I'll leave that for the neighbors to try first!

One of the Austin Tennis Academy coaches, Trey Phillips, revives an old UT Tennis tradition where a player who has the best come back to win a match is honored with the "Dig In and Climb Out" award.

Kate is featured in this news item on the Austin Tennis Academy website.

Way to go, Kate!

Whirlwind Day

Scott and I had a whirlwind Sunday. After sleeping in later than normal, we scrambled to eat, pack, and head off to the Woodlands for the CCFL Fantasy Football draft at Pat and Donna's place.

Right as the draft ended, we were 45 minutes before Kate's match at Clear Lake High School. She made it to the main draw semifinals and would be super-qualified if she won the match.

We made it there in the third game with Kate serving down 1-2. The match was fiercely contested--Kate's power versus her opponents knack of getting every shot back. Her opponent ultimately prevailed in two sets, 6-2, 6-2 (I think.)

Claire advanced to the quarterfinals before losing in a tough battle, 6-7 (8-6), 6-2.

If Kate and/or Claire reach the finals in the next tournament in Laredo in late September they will super-qualify. Good luck and work hard over the next month, girls!

We completed the day by driving back to Austin, getting in around 9:30pm completing our tour of Texas.
