Congratulations Coach Deb!

Not only is Deb a fabulous "esposa bonita" and wonderful mom to the kids, she's also an award winning coach!

Check out Deb's sportsmanship award she captured while coaching the Austin Tennis Academy kids who participated in the 2005 USTA Team Tennis Texas Sectional Championships this past weekend.

Whoo hoo!

Pick a Bale a Day

Deb was with Claire at a team tournament in New Braunfels, so I took Kate, Meg, and Scott over to Main Event. Meg wanted to do some wall climbing, and Kate followed Scott around while he did the games.

We decided to head over to Scholz Garten for lunch so we could catch some of the Texas Tech / OU game and eat at an Austin landmark, and what they claim is the oldest business in Texas, established in 1866, one year after the end of the Civil War.

We finished our knockin' about the town with a trip down to mall, at the insistence of Meg and Kate. Scott and I are not too keen on malls. As we were driving we caught the end of the Texas Tech / OU game which was quite unbelievable. The referees reviewed four of the last seven plays, and we thought the announcers were going to lose it a time or two.

The one announcer must have been practicing for weeks to say, "The Red Raiders are going to be pickin' cotton!" in full, gravel-throated voice. He had to do this twice after one of the touchdowns was reversed. We of course had to mimic this silliness for quite a while.

Congrats from us to our Red Raider nephew Sean, who I guess will be pickin' cotton come New Years day. Remember to jump down and spin around as you pick a bale that day.

Wow, A Tough Place To Play

I've been following the Longhorns since my college days beginning in 1980. I don't believe I've ever witnessed a home schedule at DKR Memorial where every single game was a blow out:

Texas 60, Louisiana-Lafayette 3
Texas 51, Rice 10
Texas 42, Colorado 17
Texas 52, Texas Tech 17
Texas 66, Kansas 14

And for good measure the OU game in Dallas: Texas 45, Oklahoma 12.
Even the vaunted 1983 team was all defense and little offense (ah, the Freddie Akers years...)

Now if we can keep our wits about us for two more games it will be a fun New Year's bowl season.

Hook 'em!

Name That Tune

After Claire's tennis practice last evening (Kate is recovering from a back injury), we went to a local favorite near the Austin Tennis Academy which I affectionately call the Ditch from its literal translation. It's a Mexican restaurant called El Arroyo. For those that have been to Austin, they are famous for their sign outside their 5th street location which generally lampoons local politicians, aggies, or anything/anyone else they choose to poke fun on a given day.

I'm pleased that the mix of radio stations in the car includes the Top 40/R&B/Hip Hop the kids like with the classic rock of the late 70s that I like, so that we are all more musically aware.

Coming back to the table from El Arroyo's restroom, Claire tells me she recognizes a Led Zeppelin song playing in there that goes du-du-dun du-du-dun du-du-dun dun-dun-dun. She can't quite name the tune (Kashmir) but I'm quite pleased she knows her Led Zeppelin when she hears it.

I'm not too bad guessing a lot of the top 40 stuff since half of it is Kelly Clarkson songs, but don't let the hip hop stuff start playing. My itchy radio button trigger finger will pop it right down the dial to yet another classic to infiltrate the young minds...

PS- Meg won her first match in a tiebreaker down in San Antonio. Go Meg (up next against the #3 seed)!
