Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day at UT
Last year I chronicled the great fun Meg and me had at the University of Texas' "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day".
They had again this year, and we were both excited to go back. After all we had bragging rights building the tallest tower our newspaper.
They had lots of different activities in the various engineering buildings from trying to float as many coins as possible on an boat designed of aluminum foil, to wind tunnels, to lego robotics, to egg bungie cord competions and much more.
In the same room where we built the tower the challenge was to build a chair out of newspaper stong enough to sit on without collapsing.
Many tried designs which featured more tape than newspaper. Meg decided the geodesic dome design was the way to go. We started rolling tubes of newspapers and the engineering students kept coming by to check on what we were doing.
It started taking shape and Meg even incorporated a star design for the seat. After one try, it needed a few more braces and it was set. It held Meg as she sat and posed with the engineering students. She received raving WOWs! for her design.
It's great that UT puts these programs on and it's even better that the students who volunteer their time share their enthusiam for engineering. What fun!
